I hated brussel sprouts when I was young. My mom used to boil the heck out of them. I still recall coming home to a house that smelled like toots. I can remember thinking "What is wrong in here? Mom must be sick....Oh man, yoooh. What died.....Oh, mom boiled brussel sprouts." God bless her, mom confessed that they did "smell" but "they are so good for you William". Let me tell you there is nothing worse than going to bed with that oder in your bedroom. Now if I had created the smell on my own, well that is another matter all together. Ha ha. And if I had with that kind of strength, I am sure I would have died from methane asphyxiation.
But now that I am older and far more mature(ha ha), I love them. Brussel sprouts are the most neglected of all veggies. Yes I know the mere thought of my previous image sends one as far away as possible.
There is a huge difference between boiled sprouts and steamed sprouts. Steamed sprouts keep some of their crunch and most of the smell inside. The texture adds much more to the eating experience. And they just taste better. All that toot smell comes out with boiling so the water is the source of the methane oder. When you steam BS's you keep all the vitamins and minerals and the oder is greatly reduced. Plus you can do some fun things with them. When I was single, I created a pasta dish with whole wheat spaghetti, roasted garlic gloves, olive oil, salt, pepper and you guessed it steamed BS's. Yummo. Simple and healthy.
So the point is that BS's are really good for your digestive track. They keep cancer away. I guess cancer does not like the smell of toots. So that is one good way to look at it. You are eating toots that kill cancer. Ha Ha.

This is disgusting. I hope your next blog is more uplifting.
ReplyDeleteLike you Bill, I hated those soft mushy stinky BS's that my mom use to boil. Dana turned me onto BS's that were steamed. They are quite good. Connor call's them little salads. He love's em. It is up to us to break the cycle of boiled BS's. Maybe we should start a Facebook group called "No More Boiled Brussel Sprouts"
ReplyDelete....LOL....Frank, I am so glad to hear that I was not the only sufferer of this abuse. I like your idea for FB. And how about we start a therapy group too. There must be millions of middle adults like us who are plagued by recurring nightmares of the oder and the texture of our mother's boiled BSs. Maybe it was their subtle attempt to get us back for torturing them for so many years. Or drive us from their house once we graduated college. When I visit my mom now, I never notice if she boils them anymore. HMMMMM?
